When work sends you to Capri, Italy for a quick 36 hour trip, you go. Especially if the job requires a night in Naples, a day on the magical island of Capri, and a recording session with the one-and-only Steve Harvey.
We flew out on Friday night and arrived in Naples Saturday morning. Jet lagged but curious, we wandered the ancient streets and back alleys of Napoli –– aka the “Birthplace of Pizza.” As you can imagine, the place that invented pizza knows how to make a great slice. So we tried a bunch of them, and yes, it’s that good.
Naples is Italy’s third largest city, and despite it’s rough-around-the-edges reputation, we found it to be a charming place. Especially as we explored the Quartieri Spagnoli, the Spanish Quarters. This is authentic Naples as you imagine it. A real bustling neighborhood, with crumbling buildings, beautiful churches, street vendors, local art and more. You don’t really need a map –– just wander.
Pro Tip: Watch out for the Vespas. They are everywhere and the locals will run you over. You’ve been warned.
Sunday morning we’re up early to catch a ferry to the legendary island of Capri. But we’re not there to sail through the Blue Grotto or sip limoncello (not yet anyway). We’re there to record audio with the man himself, Steve Harvey.
We disembark the ferry, and catch a small boat out to his magnificent yacht. Wow. Not sure which is better, the view from the yacht, or the view OF the yacht.
After meeting his family and touring the ship, we set up our audio gear and get to work. I direct the session and we record all the scripts. After our recording, Mr. Harvey graciously invites us to stay for lunch, cocktails, and the best views on Earth. Nothing like sipping a tasty vodka/cranberry while staring at Capri from the to deck of a multi-million dollar boat.
Steve Harvey is not only one of the world’s biggest celebrities, he’s also amazingly warm and welcoming. Of course he’s hilarious, but he’s inspirational too. Spiritual even. A testament to the power of positive thinking and hard work. Fun fact: He’s from Cleveland and is a life-long Browns fan. So of course we brought him some Browns gear from Homage, our favorite Ohio t-shirt shop. He loved it. He even claims that he and his hometown crew invented the name, “Dawg Pound.” Who are we to argue?
Located in the Tyrrhenian Sea off Italy’s Amalfi Coast, Capri is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the world –– and for good reason. From the main marina you hike or taxi up the mountain for stunning views of the cove-studded coastline below. After our work was done we spent the afternoon wandering this magical playground of the rich and famous. Soaking up the breathtaking views…and plenty of red wine. Grazie, Capri. Until next time, Ciao.
