Ohio’s Hocking Hills region is packed with natural wonders –– and packed with people enjoying those natural wonders. But there are equally beautiful hikes without the crowds. Sometimes you gotta take the road (or trail) less traveled. Fortunately, you’ll find friendly skies and first-class hiking at Airplane Rock.
The Airplane Rock Trail is a stunning path that’s off the beaten path. This 4.5 mile loop trail is located near Rockbridge, Ohio, within the Hocking State Forest and not far from the far-more famous Conkles Hollow. The hiking trail runs on a bridle trail and riders get the right of way. It’s listed on AllTrails as moderately challenging, but when it’s muddy (which it often is) I’d say, “This one goes to 11.” It’s easy to lose a boot to the hungry mud.
Yes, it really looks like an airplane
The challenging terrain leads you to a worthy reward: a magnificent rock outcropping shaped like the nose of an airplane. You’ll need to peek at it from the side to realize the resemblance to a plane. But even if you don’t, the airplane connection makes sense because when you stand on the outcropping you’ll feel like you’re flying over the scenic Crane Hollow below. The panoramic views are breathtaking, especially at sunset. Pro tip: If you want to see the sunset from here, you’ll end up hiking back to the parking area in the dark forest. Time your departure wisely, and make sure your iPhone is charged and your flashlight app works.
Two natural wonders in one
Another great benefit of this trail is that it’s two natural wonders in one. Before or after Airplane Rock, be sure to visit Chapel Cave. Named for its cathedral-like appearance with a triangular opening and pointed top, this large recess cave is a hidden gem in the Hocking Forest. There’s a little bit of Indiana Jones adventure waiting in there.
Winter Wanderland
While most people visit spring through fall, don’t discount the beauty of a winter visit to Airplane Rock. The trails are far less busy (as in maybe NO ONE) and on a sunny day it’s magical. Pro Tip: It’s worth investing in Yak Tracks to grip the ice and snow. They stretch easily over your boots and can save you from a nasty fall.
Whether you’re seeking a warm-weather walk or a winter wander, you’ll surely enjoy Airplane Rock and Chapel Cave any time of year.
